Oklahoma Activity: The Western Anadarko & the Cherokee

Earlier this summer at the MidCon Energy Forum, Bryan Bottoms, Director of Geology at Detring Energy Advisors , discussed how the Western Anadarko has re-emerged as one of the most active play regions in the Mid-Continent.

That renewed activity has brought new interest to the area, along with a number of transactions that have changed the operator landscape. Today, the region includes many private operators alongside some familiar names.

Bryan also noted that the Mid-Continent continues to provide some of the best development opportunities in the Lower 48.

As a company focused on Oklahoma, that's exciting to us and to our clients.

Using Convey640 data , we looked at recent completion activity in Oklahoma , focusing on horizontal wells with spud dates in 2025 and 2026. We identified 277 unique wells across the state .

The Western Anadarko stands out in that data. In Ellis, Roger Mills, and Custer counties , we found 87 unique wells , with 66 listing the Cherokee among their targeted formations .

Mewbourne leads the activity in these counties, along with operators including Crawley Petroleum, Nadel & Gussman, Continental Resources, Citizen Energy Ventures, SandRidge, Rockies Resources, and BCE-Mach III.

And the activity isn't limited to the Western Anadarko. We are also seeing horizontal completions across counties such as Kingfisher, Blaine, Grady, McClain, Garvin, Stephens, and Carter , with a mix of operators and formations contributing to activity across the state.

But as Bryan pointed out at the MidCon Energy Forum, the real driver in the state continues to be the Cherokee. Our data certainly supports that observation.
